Spain Thrive on Europe's Leading Hydrogen Producer

Opportunities for heavy industry & Challenges for transportation and storage

In 2020, Spanish government’s Council of Ministers approved the proposal drafted from MITECO that “Hydrogen Roadmap: a commitment to renewable hydrogen” will be the main guide to create the basic framework which enables the general challenges and opportunities for robust development of hydrogen in Spain can be identified clearly.

As of 2020, there are 5 Hydrogen refueling stations installed, nearly 500,000t hydrogen consumed each year, mostly grey hydrogen and roughly 70% are used as the raw materials in refineries and chemical product manufacturers of 50%. Meanwhile, the production costs of green hydrogen in Spain flowed between €4.25 and 4.50 per kilogram, however in 2030, it will expected to get cut almost in half between €2.50 and €2.75, and can even achieve only €1 per kilogram in 2050.

Although the development of the hydrogen market in Spain is still at an early stage, it does have significant potential for its big growth. As Spain positions itself to be Europe's green hydrogen hub, ambitious goals are established within the three phases which are closely connected and based on the EU Hydrogen Strategy, meanwhile, during the period 2021-2023, €1.5bn of public funding would be devoted to developing renewable hydrogen, especially €140bn from the EU coronavirus recovery funds will be allocated to Spain that half as grants and half as loans to transform its economy. Additionally, Spain has already approved a budget to borrow €27bn and receive it in advance in order to help Spain’s small and medium-sized businesses for the companies’ digitalisation and carbon emissions reduction.

2020-2024:-  Installing 300-600 MW of electrolyser plants

2025-2030:-  Installing 4 GW of electrolyser plants

Industry:

At least 25% of total hydrogen consumption in all industries should be contributed by renewable hydrogen

Transport:

150-200 fuel cell buses5,000-7,500 light & heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles setting for freight transport 100-150 hydrogen stations

Electricity storage & take full advantage of surplus renewable energy.

2030-2050:-  “Renewable Hydrogen Economy” Improving hydrogen production competitiveness compared to other technologies

“carbon-zero” in 2050 competitively priced energy supply of better quality

However, there are plenty of supports and factors need to be considered if Spain aims to achieve those objectives, the improvement of production, and a series of measures need to be solved for its transportation and storage. In addition, the regulatory measures and financing mechanisms are also imperative for the development of its large-scale renewable hydrogen production distribution over the coming years.
