The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $434.25 million loan on 24 October 2024 to enhance renewable energy capacity and energy security in Assam, India. ADB’s support aims to address Assam's renewable energy shortfall, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and meeting rising energy demands, according to Principal Energy Specialist Jiwan Acharya.
The Assam Solar Project will establish a 500 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in the Karbi Anglong district, alongside a grid-connected battery energy storage system developed through a joint venture between Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and Tripura Power Company Ltd. This storage system will stabilize the grid and support peak demand.
Additionally, ADB will aid in attracting private investments by reinforcing Assam’s public-private partnership (PPP) framework. A new PPP agreement will support a further 250 MW solar PV facility in Karbi Anglong. Improvements to electricity distribution in the facility's vicinity include installing aerial covered conductor cables and distribution transformers.
ADB will also provide a $1 million grant from its Clean Energy Fund to support project implementation, APDCL capacity building, and community awareness. Founded in 1966, ADB continues to pursue sustainable development across Asia and the Pacific.
