AES Chile announced the acquisition of the 171 MWp Atacama Solar park from Sonnedix, located in the Tarapacá Region between Pica and Pozo Almonte. The facility consists of 494,640 solar panels and 48 inverters across 450 hectares. The transaction amount was not disclosed.
Atacama Solar, operational since April 2021, is connected to the 220 kV Lagunas substation via a 46 km transmission line.
Javier Dib, Market Business Leader at AES Chile, commented, "This acquisition marks our entry into the Tarapacá Region, where we also have two additional projects—Solar Oriente and Llanos del Sol—totaling 1,500 MW under environmental approval." He emphasized that the asset supports AES's Greentegra strategy and strengthens its renewable energy portfolio.
AES also plans to build a battery storage system adjacent to the plant to supply energy during non-sunny hours. "As leaders in energy storage in Latin America, we will continue developing this technology to provide Chile with essential energy solutions," Dib added.
For Sonnedix, the sale supports its global growth plans. Daniel Garrido, General Manager of Sonnedix Chile, noted, "This transaction helps streamline our portfolio, improve efficiency, and maintain high performance as we continue to focus on project origination and asset conversion in Chile."
Sonnedix's development portfolio includes 1.5 GW of solar, wind, and storage projects, contributing to Chile’s energy transition.
Pan American Finance served as the exclusive financial advisor to Sonnedix in the deal.
