Airtel Nigeria Transits To Clean Energy

Airtel Nigeria has announced a strategic initiative to significantly cut its carbon footprint by transitioning to cleaner energy sources. This effort aims to reduce emissions and support Nigeria’s renewable energy and climate change objectives.

During a media roundtable in Lagos, Femi Adeniran, Director of Corporate Communications and CSR at Airtel Nigeria, emphasized that this decision aligns with the company's commitment to environmental sustainability and operational cost efficiency. With over 15,000 sites across Nigeria, each currently relying on at least one diesel generator, Airtel plans to optimize these sites by shifting to solar power as part of its sustainability strategy.

Adeniran noted that while the company’s monthly expenses could be higher, collaboration with other telecom operators allows them to share infrastructure, thus reducing costs. He stated, “We are committed to minimising our environmental footprint. Our transition to grid and solar power will significantly reduce diesel consumption and mitigate climate change.

Airtel, one of the leading telecommunications providers in Nigeria, will begin phasing out its reliance on diesel-powered generators, which have long been the backbone of energy supply at its cell sites, offices, and other installations across the country. In our place, the company plans to deploy renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, along with more energy-efficient technologies, ” he stated.

Harmanpreet Singh Dhillon, Director of Network Transformation and Planning, revealed that Airtel will invest in lithium-ion batteries to replace traditional batteries, further reducing carbon emissions. He highlighted the introduction of outdoor-operable electronics, which do not require indoor air conditioning due to their ability to withstand high humidity, temperatures, and dust, thereby lowering overall energy consumption.

Kemi Ariyo, Director of Information Technology, announced that Airtel will spearhead the adoption of green technologies, starting with its data centers. The new data center, slated for completion by 2027, will enhance the company’s sustainability efforts and capacity.
