AMEA Power to build a 1GW solar PV project with a 600MWh BESS in Egypt

Dubai-based renewable energy developer, AMEA Power, has secured two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to develop two major renewable energy projects in Egypt's Aswan Governorate. These projects, totaling US$800 million in investment, include a 1GW solar plant with a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Benban area, and a 300MWh BESS expansion at the 500MW Abydos solar PV plant, which is currently under construction.

The Benban solar plant is set to become Africa's largest solar-plus-BESS project, while the Abydos facility will introduce Egypt's first-ever utility-scale BESS. Together, these projects are expected to generate clean energy for more than 769,000 homes and create approximately 2,500 jobs during peak construction.

AMEA Power Chairman, Hussain Al Nowais, highlighted the broader impact of the projects, stating, "By investing in Egypt’s energy future, we are reinforcing our dedication to driving positive change and supporting socio-economic development across the regions we serve."

With the latest developments, AMEA Power’s total renewable energy capacity in Egypt will reach 2GW of solar and 900MWh of BESS. The company is active in 20 countries, with over 6GW of projects in its pipeline and 1.6GW currently operational or under construction.

These projects will play a crucial role in improving grid stability in Egypt, especially as the country faces power shortages, and will also accelerate the growth of renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Egypt aims to add 4GW of new renewable energy capacity by next summer, aligning with the global shift toward cleaner energy sources.

This announcement follows a similar deal by Norwegian renewable developer Scatec, which also signed a PPA to build a 1GW solar-plus-storage project in Egypt. Both AMEA Power and Scatec claim to be pioneering Egypt’s first utility-scale BESS projects, marking a significant leap forward for the country’s renewable energy sector.
