Ameresco SUNEL Energy SA—a joint venture between U.S.-based Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC) and international EPC contractor SUNEL Group—has signed €303.4 million in EPC contracts for three large-scale solar parks in southwestern Romania, totaling 466 MWp.
These projects mark a significant step in Romania’s efforts to transition away from coal, enhance energy security, and meet its climate goals. The solar parks will replace coal-fired generation and support the country’s target to phase out coal by 2032.
Ameresco SUNEL will oversee the full EPC scope: design, procurement, construction, commissioning, as well as ongoing operations and maintenance. The projects will utilize over 757,000 fixed-tilt solar modules and are expected to offset more than 730,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.
Pete Christakis, President of East USA & Managing Director of Ameresco SUNEL, emphasized that these projects highlight their commitment to advancing renewables in Europe:
“We're proud to support Romania’s clean energy goals and contribute to regional energy diversification.”
Konstantinos Zygouras, Vice President at Ameresco SUNEL, added:
“Romania has vast solar potential. Strategic investments like this will help position the country as a clean energy leader in Europe.”
The construction timeline is set at 18 months. Once complete, the projects will play a crucial role in Romania’s energy transition and economic development.
