Aquila Clean Energy EMEA has begun construction on a 56 MW / 112 MWh battery storage project in Wetzen, Lower Saxony, as part of its commitment to Germany’s energy transition. This facility is one of 14 battery storage projects the company is developing across Germany, with a combined capacity of over 900 MW.
The Wetzen facility will enhance grid stability and enable the integration of renewable energy by providing a two-hour storage system for wholesale market optimisation and grid balancing. It can store and discharge electricity over two hours, supplying power to approximately 135,000 households.
The project will utilize advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, known for their safety, sustainability, and long lifespan. Trina Storage will supply the LFP cells, while H&MV Engineering will oversee construction. The project is set to be commissioned in early 2026.
Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, which manages a 4.5 GW battery storage portfolio across Europe, is committed to expanding storage capacity to support grid stability and decarbonisation. Germany’s Federal Network Agency projects significant growth in battery storage capacity by 2037, underscoring the increasing demand for such solutions.
