Balance Power has received planning approval for its 49.5MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hinksford, South Staffordshire.
Designed to store renewable energy during periods of excess generation and feed it back into the grid during peak demand, the project will help power around 26,800 homes and play a key role in stabilizing the grid as the UK transitions to net zero.
The facility, consisting of 36 battery units across 2.59 hectares, is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 18,300 tonnes annually—equivalent to removing 13,200 cars from the road or planting 29,200 trees. The site will also deliver a 154.98% net gain in biodiversity through dedicated habitat improvements.
Planning consent was granted through a delegated decision following extensive consultation with the local community, council members, and stakeholders.
The project is set to create local jobs and strengthen regional energy security, with operations slated to begin in autumn 2025. After a 40-year lifespan, the facility will be decommissioned and the land restored.
With over 500MW already approved and 2GW in development, Balance Power continues to lead the deployment of decentralised energy infrastructure across the UK.
