Balance Power secures permit for 99-MW English BESS project

UK independent energy developer Balance Power said on Tuesday it has been granted approval to install a 99-MW/99-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Gloucestershire, England.

The permit was awarded by the South Gloucestershire Council following community consultations that led to changes in the design, scale, and location of the project.

The Iron Acton BESS will be located across a 2.3-ha site and will consist of 19 battery units. The electricity set to be stored by the facility will be enough to power around 26,700 homes and offset 18,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The system will be designed to store power during peak production times and feed it back into the grid when demand is high, thus stabilising network frequency.

While the project’s construction timeline has still not been defined, Balance Power said it is trying to bring forward the commissioning date which was initially set for June 2036.

At present, Balance Power has almost 2 GW of projects in the development stages. Earlier this month, it was obtained planning approval for a 49.5-MW/99-MWh battery in southwest Leicestershire, England.
