The French government on Wednesday awarded a 250-MW commercial floating wind project off the south coast of Brittany to Pennavel, a consortium of Belgium’s Elicio and Germany’s BayWa r.e. AG.
Pennavel secured a contract-for-difference for the project at a price of EUR 86.45 (USD 94.02) per MWh, the ministry of economy said, concluding the AO5 floating wind tender.
When assessing Pennavel’s proposal, the government took into account the consortium’s commitment to raise at least EUR 10 million from the people and local authorities in the Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions through crowdfunding and equity investments, hire SMEs for various operations, as well as people at risk of social and professional exclusion, and contribute a minimum EUR 20 million to environmental measures and the biodiversity fund, among others.
“I would also like to pay tribute to the quality of the bids submitted by the other bidders. The opportunities will multiply with the award of 14 GW over the next three years, and I'm counting on their participation,” said minister delegate for industry, Roland Lescure.
France aims to have 18 GW of offshore wind capacity in operation in 2035 and at least 45 GW in 2050.
With the latest award, the consortium of the Belgium wind developer and the German renewables company celebrates its second floating wind allocation in Europe. The companies, alongside floating wind tech developer BW Ideol, previously won an option agreement to develop the Buchan offshore wind farm off Scotland.
