Glasgow-based renewable energy developer BayWa r.e. has applied for Section 36 approval from the Scottish Government to develop a 500 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in South Lanarkshire, approximately 3 km south of Douglas. The Redshaw BESS project, developed in partnership with Douglas and Angus Estates, is the largest in BayWa r.e.’s UK portfolio.
Located next to Scottish Power Transmission’s planned 400kV Redshaw substation, the BESS will store excess renewable energy and release it during peak demand, helping to improve grid stability, energy security, and efficiency. Large-scale storage projects like Redshaw are essential for integrating wind and solar power and advancing the UK’s net-zero goals.
If approved, the project will operate for 40 years and provide long-term community benefits through an annual community fund to support local initiatives.
Gemma Hamilton, Head of Development Strategy & Origination at BayWa r.e. UK, emphasized the project’s role in accelerating the energy transition:"By locating large-scale storage systems in strategic locations, ensuring optionality around future technology, and developing strong local partnerships, we are creating an energy solution that will make a significant contribution to the drive towards net zero."
