Eneco has launched Belgium’s largest battery storage project in Ville-sur-Haine, Wallonia, near Mons and about 20 kilometers from the French border.
The facility features a storage capacity of 200 MWh and a power output of 50 MW, capable of supplying electricity to the high-voltage grid for up to four hours.
This battery system is key to stabilizing both Belgian and European power grids. By storing surplus renewable energy when generation exceeds demand and discharging it when solar and wind output is low, it maximizes green energy utilization while reducing dependence on gas and coal-fired power plants.
Eneco is also set to manage and trade electricity from an additional battery project in Belgium, developed by BSTOR and Duferco. Located in La Louvière, this system will have a capacity of 140 MWh and 50 MW. Construction is already underway, with commissioning expected next year.
