bp and the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2) have inked a cooperative agreement.
Both organizations will enhance their relations to promote hydrogen technology and work to construct Spain’s energy future thanks to this agreement.
Green hydrogen and other low-carbon energy technologies are crucial for bp to reach net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner. In this regard, the Castellón refinery is being transformed into a decarbonization-focused energy center. Energy efficiency, renewable energies, biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel, electric mobility, and green hydrogen will be key.
bp is creating the Valencian Community’s largest renewable hydrogen project. By 2025, a 60MW electrolyser is expected to be operational, producing up to 9,000 tons/year of green hydrogen to decarbonize the refinery’s operations in the short term and the region’s industry and transportation in the medium term. This reduces annual CO2 emissions by 72,000 tons. The ceramics industry and heavy transportation fleets are developing pilot concepts.
This modular electrolyser will be built at bp’s Castellón factory. In its last phase, from 2030, the goal is to boost electricity and allow exports.
