Global energy storage owner-operator BW ESS and Munich-based developer MIRAI Power have signed a joint development agreement to co-develop up to 1GW of battery energy storage projects in Southern Germany.
Germany is emerging as a key growth market for large-scale BESS, driven by increasing renewable integration, negative pricing challenges, and curtailment risks. As Europe's largest and most liquid power market, Germany is expected to add 7GWh of new storage by 2026—a five-fold capacity increase.
MIRAI Power, led by an experienced renewables team, specializes in European BESS development. Partnering with BW ESS—known for rapidly scaling global energy storage pipelines—will enable the joint origination and development of strategic projects in Southern Germany.
Roberto Jiménez, Executive Director at BW ESS, highlighted the strong synergy between the teams: “MIRAI Power shares our pragmatic approach, speed, and commercial expertise. Most importantly, they share our commitment to unlocking the value of energy storage.”
Marco Frascati, Managing Director of MIRAI Power, emphasized the partnership’s role in accelerating Germany’s energy transition: “Southern Germany has significant energy storage potential. Collaborating with BW ESS will help us drive forward innovative BESS solutions for a more sustainable and reliable energy future.”
