Centrica Energy and Aquila Clean Energy have signed an optimisation agreement for a 50MW/50MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kotka, southern Finland.
Centrica Energy will manage the battery’s operation, balancing the grid and maximising revenue through multi-market optimisation, including participation in spot and ancillary service markets.
Finland’s renewable energy sector continues to grow, with over 142GW of onshore and offshore wind projects expected by 2024. As renewable energy shares increase, the demand for flexible assets like battery storage rises, and this BESS is key to maximising green electricity usage.
This 50MW/50MWh BESS is Aquila Clean Energy’s first large-scale project in Finland, following a history of large BESS developments across Europe.
In Belgium, the company commissioned a 25MW/100MWh system in 2023, and in Germany, it is developing two projects with a combined 106MW power capacity and 212MWh of energy storage. Aquila Clean Energy currently manages a 7GW BESS portfolio across Europe.
