During its Annual Shareholders' Meeting, Colbún S.A. revealed plans to invest US$650 million in energy storage and clean energy projects over the next two years (2025–2026), marking a significant step in the company’s commitment to advancing Chile’s energy transition.
Hernán Rodríguez, Chairman of Colbún, stressed the urgency of modernizing Chile’s regulatory framework to promote sustainable growth and attract investments. "To achieve our country’s potential and ensure a responsible energy transition, we must foster a regulatory environment that values growth alongside sustainability," he stated.
Rodríguez emphasized the importance of aligning carbon neutrality goals with a resilient electricity system, noting that Chile’s energy future requires investments that can drive both economic progress and environmental protection.
Key Investments and Projects
At the meeting’s conclusion, Colbún CEO José Ignacio Escobar shared updates on several high-profile projects. Among the planned investments, the company has signed a deal with e-STORAGE, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, to deliver 912 MWh of battery storage for the Diego de Almagro Sur Solar Park in northern Chile. The project, estimated at US$200 million, will begin construction in June 2025.
This project follows Colbún’s earlier investment in the Celda Solar Project in Camarones, which includes 228 MW of power and 912 MWh of storage. Furthermore, Colbún has entered an agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy to purchase and commercialize energy from a 230 MW battery storage facility in Antofagasta.
These initiatives solidify Colbún’s position as one of the leaders in energy storage development in Chile, with nearly 700 MW of storage capacity in the pipeline.
In addition to storage, Colbún continues to lead the renewable energy sector with substantial investments in wind power. The company recently completed the installation of 140 wind turbines at the Horizonte Wind Farm (816 MW), located in Taltal, and acquired two additional wind farms: San Juan (193 MW) and Totoral (46 MW).
These moves have positioned Colbún as Chile’s largest wind energy operator, with a combined capacity exceeding 1,000 MW.
The company also highlighted its success in securing long-term renewable energy supply contracts with major mining companies, including Codelco (1,100 GWh annually) and Antofagasta Minerals (912 GWh annually), both for 15 years.
