Colbún's BESS Celda Solar Project in Chile to Feature 228 MW / 912 MWh Storage, Supplied by Tesla

The Celda Solar project, being developed by the Chilean energy company Colbún in the Arica and Parinacota region, will feature 200 Megapack units, Tesla’s battery system designed for large-scale energy storage projects.

Colbún, along with the U.S. electric vehicle and battery manufacturer Tesla, has announced an agreement to supply a Megapack battery system with 228 MW of power and 912 MWh of daily energy storage for the Celda Solar project, located in the Camarones commune, in the Arica and Parinacota region.

Megapack is Tesla's energy storage system designed for large-scale projects, with units capable of storing more than 3.9 MWh—enough to power an average of 3,600 homes for one hour, according to the company.

In a statement, it was explained that this will be Colbún’s first large-scale energy storage system and one of the largest in Chile.

The Celda Solar energy storage project will involve a total investment of USD 260 million and is expected to generate 200 jobs at its peak construction stage. The development will be located on an 8-hectare site granted by the Ministry of National Assets and is expected to begin operations in mid-2026, with a capacity to provide energy equivalent to the consumption of 55,480 homes.

The information also mentions that the design of Celda Solar includes the construction of the SE Chaca substation and a 3.5-kilometer transmission line to connect with the existing SE Roncacho substation.

Colbún’s expectations are to complete 1,500 MW of solar, wind, and storage capacity by 2026. Their portfolio includes the Diego de Almagro Sur solar park (230 MW plus 8 MW / 32 MWh of batteries); the San Juan and Totoral wind farms (239 MW), recently acquired; the Horizonte wind project (816 MW), which is about to begin operations; and the Celda Solar project (228 MW).
