Cummins joins the Hydrogen Engine Alliance

Cummins announced on Tuesday (June 7) that it has joined the Hydrogen Engine Alliance, an initiative bringing together European industry representatives to support research and development for sustainable hydrogen internal combustion engines (ICE).

Despite large-scale development of hydrogen fuel cell electric power solutions, hydrogen ICEs remain popular due to the long-standing technology, with many believing it could lead to faster deployment in a wider range of markets.

Cummins recently unveiled its fuel-agnostic engine range which includes hydrogen ICEs in 6.7 to 15 litre models for on and off-road applications.

Jonathan Atkinson, Executive Director of Cummins, said, “We are delighted to participate in the Hydrogen Engine Alliance and look forward to working together with fellow members to advance decarbonisation of the power industry.

“Internal combustion engines are efficient, robust and can operate continuously under heavy load, attributes that will carry forward with hydrogen fuel.

“These advantages, combined with carbon dioxide neutrality, means hydrogen has the potential to play a significant role in decarbonising both commercial and industrial applications.”

Cummins joins major automotive companies, industry suppliers, and academic institutions such as, Bosch, Daimler Truck, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, with its membership of the Hydrogen Engine Alliance.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Koch, Chairman of the Hydrogen Engine Alliance, said, “We are pleased to welcome Cummins into the Hydrogen Engine Alliance.

“Technological openness will be a significant contributor to achieving our global climate goals and this initiative harnesses the expertise of key industry players to promote rapid and efficient development of hydrogen as a favourable power source.”
