EDF Renewables North America has finalized a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Arizona Public Service (APS) for the Beehive Battery Energy Storage System. This stand-alone BESS, situated in Peoria, Maricopa County, Arizona, will feature a capacity of 250 MW with a 4-hour duration.
Beehive BESS, a new project from EDF Renewables, is set to begin construction in 2025 and achieve commercial operation in 2026. This facility will feature lithium-ion battery enclosures, inverters, transformers, and a substation, with a total energy output of 1,000 MWh. The Beehive project will store electricity from the grid during peak renewable energy periods and release it back during high-demand hours, addressing APS's growing energy and capacity needs.
Dai Owen, Senior Vice President at EDF Renewables, emphasized the critical role of storage technologies in supporting utilities like APS in the transition to renewable energy. He stated, "By adding Beehive to APS’s diverse power supply, it will be better equipped to deliver reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy to customers, even when sunlight isn’t available."
APS Vice President Brian Cole noted that integrating storage solutions like Beehive enhances flexibility in meeting energy demands and supports the incorporation of variable renewable sources, such as solar, into the grid.
With over 35 years of experience and 18 gigawatts of developed renewable projects, EDF Renewables remains committed to helping customers achieve their carbon-reduction goals through innovative energy solutions.
