EdgePoint Towers Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of EdgePoint Infrastructure, has successfully launched its first solar hybrid telecom site in Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards sustainable energy solutions within the telecommunications sector.
The newly deployed solar hybrid site, with a capacity of 5.9 kilowatt-peak (kWp), operates independently using photovoltaic (solar) energy, backed by battery storage. The system is capable of generating up to 100% of the power required for telecommunications equipment, effectively reducing reliance on diesel fuel and contributing to a cleaner environment. This initiative is part of EdgePoint’s broader strategy to enhance energy efficiency and minimize its environmental footprint.
“We are proud to contribute to the deployment of renewable energy solutions that meet the current and future needs of sustainability and long-term cost efficiency,” said Muniff Kamaruddin, CEO of EdgePoint Towers. “Solar energy is particularly well-suited for Malaysia, given its equatorial climate and abundant sunlight. By integrating solar power into telecom infrastructure, we are not only reducing operational costs but also lowering carbon emissions.”
The solar hybrid site is expected to reduce the site’s annual carbon emissions by approximately 78%, while ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for travelers in remote areas such as highways, tunnels, and terminals. This development also supports the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance national connectivity by utilizing renewable energy to power telecom operations in hard-to-reach locations.
EdgePoint Towers plans to expand its renewable energy program across Malaysia by deploying more solar hybrid and fully solar-powered sites by the end of 2025. The company aims to further its commitment to the country’s green energy goals and set new benchmarks for energy-efficient telecom infrastructure.
“As we continue to expand our renewable energy initiatives, we are excited about collaborating with both Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and non-MNO clients to help them meet their green objectives,” Kamaruddin added. “This is a key part of our mission to drive industry-wide transformation toward cleaner, more efficient operations.”
With a portfolio of approximately 15,800 sites across Southeast Asia, including 1,800 sites in Malaysia, EdgePoint Infrastructure is one of the fastest-growing and largest telecommunications tower operators in the region. Through its continued focus on sustainability, the company aims to lead the way in promoting green energy solutions within the telecom industry.
