Egypt to Construct Solar Energy and Battery Storage Facility Next Year

Construction of Egypt's first solar and battery storage hybrid project is set to commence in the first half of 2025. The project will feature a 1 GW solar capacity paired with a 100 MW (200 MWh) battery storage system.

Norway's Scatec, which recently announced a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), will handle Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) as well as Asset Management (AM) and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services for the project.

In July, Hilde Klemetsdal, the Norwegian ambassador to Egypt, highlighted to Egypt's Minister of Public Business Sector, Mohamed Shimy, the interest of Norwegian companies in expanding their investments in the Egyptian market.

Scatec has also signed a mandate letter with several development financing institutions for concessional financing and expects to finalize financial arrangements with lenders soon.

"This will be the first hybrid solar and battery project in Egypt," stated Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog. "We will now finalize land lease agreements, grid connection agreements, and financing, and prepare for the construction of the project."
