Eiffage Energía Sistemas is installing a new battery energy storage system (BESS) using recycled electric vehicle batteries at ACCIONA Energía's Extremadura I-II-III solar plant in Almendralejo (Badajoz).
The project includes civil works, battery container unloading, power station setup, electrical connections, and medium-voltage evacuation (30kV). The system will consist of two battery containers and a power station with a total capacity of 2MW/5MWh, enabling energy storage from the solar plant for optimized grid injection.
The project uses second-life batteries from Silence electric vehicles along with new electric car batteries. This approach enables performance analysis of recycled vs. new batteries, advancing circular economy goals. Recycled vehicle batteries become a valuable resource post-mobility, reducing the environmental impact of new battery production and promoting responsible resource management.
BESS systems are key to utilizing renewable energy by storing excess energy from intermittent sources like solar and wind, and releasing it during demand surges. This enhances grid stability and energy security during emergencies, such as extreme weather or blackouts.
