Elon Musk Explains Why Solar Will Dominate Future Energy Generation, Citing the Kardashev Scale

Tesla founder Elon Musk has reiterated his support for solar energy, emphasizing its future potential. In a recent tweet, Musk stated that after understanding the Kardashev Scale—an index that measures a civilization's technological development based on its energy usage—it's clear that solar power will eventually become the dominant energy source.

The Kardashev Scale, introduced by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev, classifies civilizations by the energy they can harness, ranging from planetary to interstellar capabilities. Musk pointed out that solar energy, even from a small region of Texas or New Mexico, could theoretically meet all of the United States' electricity needs.

He explained that one square mile of land can receive around 2.5 gigawatts of solar energy, and with solar panel efficiency, about 3 gigawatt-hours of energy could be generated per day from this area. He added that Tesla’s Starlink satellite network is fully powered by solar energy and battery storage.

Musk, confident in solar's potential, has built Tesla’s Solar division around this vision, providing rooftop solar panels and energy storage solutions to households.
