EnergyAustralia has officially commenced construction on the 350MW Wooreen Energy Storage System (WESS) in Latrobe Valley, Victoria. As one of Australia’s largest battery storage projects, WESS will enhance grid stability and support Victoria’s renewable energy transition.

Following financial close on 20th February 2025, construction is now underway on the four-hour battery system, which will provide power to 230,000 homes before requiring recharging. The $700 million investment reinforces EnergyAustralia’s commitment to clean energy and grid reliability.

Strategically located near the Jeeralang gas-fired power station, the site was selected for its proximity to the grid and land availability, ensuring efficient integration into Victoria’s electricity network. The project is expected to boost the local economy by creating jobs during construction and operation while maintaining Latrobe Valley’s legacy of powering communities and industries.

The name “Wooreen,” meaning “light,” was gifted by Gunaikurnai Elders, symbolizing the project’s role in shaping a sustainable energy future.

EnergyAustralia’s Managing Director, Mark Collette, emphasized the significance of WESS: “This is the largest single project investment by EnergyAustralia. It will strengthen grid resilience, support renewable energy adoption, and deliver better energy outcomes for customers.”

Wärtsilä Energy will supply the battery equipment, with Vice President Andrew Tang noting, “This project is a major milestone in EnergyAustralia’s decarbonization journey and will further accelerate Australia’s renewable energy capacity.” Zenviron will handle the balance-of-plant works, with CEO Carl Keating highlighting the company’s commitment to supporting Victoria’s energy growth and engaging local communities during construction.

Beyond energy storage, EnergyAustralia has pledged over $1 million in community benefit initiatives, including grants for local groups, First Nations training programs, and funding for Country Fire Authority resources.

With government support and strong community backing, the Wooreen Energy Storage System aligns with Victoria’s renewable energy goals and marks a major step in Australia’s clean energy transition.
