ENGIE and Energy Dome Sign Offtake Agreement for First Full-Scale CO2 Battery in Italy

Energy Dome and ENGIE have signed an offtake agreement for Energy Dome’s first full-scale CO2 Battery in Ottana, Sardinia, Italy, marking a significant step in the global transition to long-duration energy storage (LDES).

Set to be operational in Q1 2025, the CO2 Battery will be one of the few energy storage assets globally with a 10-hour discharge duration supported by a commercial agreement.

Under the deal, Energy Dome will own and operate the facility, while ENGIE will optimize and dispatch stored energy in the Italian power market. This collaboration highlights the critical role of LDES in enhancing grid resilience and reliability, contributing to ENGIE’s strategy of advancing energy storage solutions to support renewable energy integration.

Energy Dome’s Ottana Project was the first European initiative to secure funding from the EU-Catalyst program, which accelerates emerging climate technologies. The partnership, backed by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, the European Commission, and the European Investment Bank, underscores the importance of technologies like LDES in meeting global energy storage targets.

ENGIE’s Edouard Neviaski stated: “This collaboration underscores our commitment to providing flexible, low-carbon solutions to meet renewable energy demand and support the energy transition.”

Energy Dome CEO Claudio Spadacini added: “This agreement validates our technology and accelerates our mission to decarbonize the world through sustainable, large-scale energy storage.”

The Ottana CO2 Battery is a 20MW/200MWh unit capable of supplying power to 14,000 households for 10 hours, showcasing the scalability of Energy Dome’s technology. This deal marks Energy Dome’s first “Energy Storage as a Service” agreement and demonstrates its market readiness to scale globally.
