A consortium of BSTOR (75%), SOCOFE (15%), and SOPAER (10%) has announced the launch of ESTOR-LUX II, a new 270 MWh battery energy storage park located in Aubange, Luxembourg Province. Positioned near an Elia high-voltage substation, this project marks a key milestone in Belgium’s energy transition and electricity storage infrastructure development.

Battery storage projects address the increasing flexibility demands driven by renewable energy development. They help stabilize grid balance by managing the fluctuations of renewable energy, offering a more cost-effective and reactive solution compared to conventional gas-based flexibility sources, which are expensive and highly CO2-emitting.

With a connection power of 100 MW and a storage capacity of 270 MWh, ESTOR-LUX II in Aubange exceeds ESTOR-LUX I in Bastogne (which started operations in December 2021) by more than 10 times in capacity. The Aubange park will include 70 lithium-ion battery containers, each with 3.8 MWh capacity. Construction has started, with commissioning expected in autumn 2026. Enecowill will manage the park’s flexible capacity distribution across various markets.

The total investment for ESTOR-LUX II is 124 million euros, with 65% funded through non-recourse debt from KBC, Belfius, and Triodos, and the rest from equity.

Cedric Legros, Managing Director of BSTOR, emphasized: "ESTOR-LUX I proved our model’s strength, and this more ambitious project highlights our role as a pioneer in Belgium’s energy transition. By the end of 2026, our combined battery storage parks, including ESTOR-LUX I, DSTOR, and ESTOR-LUX II, will reach over 430 MWh."

Jean-Marie Bréban, General Manager of SOCOFE, added: "This project supports renewable energy development and societal decarbonization. We’re excited to continue our work with BSTOR and SOPAER in advancing the energy transition with infrastructure that ensures grid balance."

Fabian Collard, Chairman of SOPAER, noted: "As part of the Sofilux and Idelux group, SOPAER is proud to contribute to the energy transition. Like the Bastogne park, ESTOR-LUX II offers grid regulation at more favorable terms than traditional flexibility sources, benefiting both the environment and consumers."
