Fluence Energy, Inc. has introduced Smartstack™, a next-generation AC-based energy storage platform designed for grid-scale applications worldwide. With customer deliveries set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, Smartstack is engineered to address key industry challenges such as logistics constraints, land use limitations, and the growing need for higher energy density and scalability.
Smartstack features a patent-pending modular design, allowing battery storage systems to be divided into transportable units. This approach streamlines shipping, reduces installation complexity, and maximizes site utilization. The system delivers up to 7.5 MWh per unit, representing a 30% increase in energy density compared to currently available AC-based systems. The platform is available in multiple configurations, supporting 2-hour, 4-hour, 6-hour, and 8-hour storage durations to meet the evolving needs of energy markets.
Fluence CEO Julian Nebreda highlighted the platform’s impact on the industry:"Smartstack redefines how energy storage systems are designed, built, and maintained. By addressing critical challenges such as supply chain logistics, density optimization, and modular scalability, we are providing a platform that enhances project economics while ensuring long-term operational efficiency."
The Smartstack system comprises two key components: the Smart Skid, which houses advanced cooling, power control, and monitoring equipment, and the Battery Pods, which can be easily replaced during maintenance or technology upgrades. The platform integrates locally deployed AI, autonomously optimizing system controls while providing full visibility across storage assets. Fluence guarantees up to 99% availability through its long-term service agreements, ensuring reliable and optimized performance for customers.
Designed with safety and cybersecurity at its core, Smartstack incorporates multi-layer protection systems and large-scale fire prevention technologies, building on the safety features of Fluence’s established Gridstack product line. Additionally, the modular architecture allows for a regionalized supply chain approach, improving availability, cost efficiency, and compliance while mitigating geopolitical and logistical risks.
With more than 37.7 GWh of deployed and contracted storage projects globally, Fluence continues to push the boundaries of intelligent energy storage solutions, reinforcing its position as a market leader in grid modernization and renewable energy integration.
