Germany Sees 1,400 MW Boost in Photovoltaic Capacity for July, According to Federal Network Agency

In July 2024, Germany experienced a notable uptick in the installation of new photovoltaic (PV) systems, with around 95,909 new systems adding a total of 1,404.5 megawatts (MW) of capacity, according to the Federal Network Agency. This marks a significant rise compared to previous months, reflecting an acceleration in the expansion of solar energy infrastructure.

The data indicates that around half of the new installations in July were from systems awarded through tenders and subsidized programs. The Federal Network Agency's figures, updated through August 13th, show a cumulative increase of nearly 9,343 MW in the first seven months of 2024. This is a substantial improvement over the same period last year, which saw a total increase of 7,695 MW.

For July alone, the reported expansion of 1,404.5 MW surpasses both June’s 1,304 MW and May’s 116 MW, the latter being the lowest monthly expansion for the year thus far. The total installed capacity of photovoltaic systems in Germany reached 92,235.7 MW by the end of July 2024.

Regional data highlights that North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Lower Saxony were the leading contributors to the new installations. The detailed segment analysis for July shows that 756.5 MW came from new rooftop systems under feed-in tariffs and market premiums. This figure is nearly on par with June’s 756.5 MW and surpasses May’s 731 MW.

The remaining expansion was driven by new systems with tender surcharges and unsubsidized installations. Specifically, structural systems added 166.2 MW and open-space systems contributed 100.1 MW. Of the total 366 MW from tenders, over 355 MW were attributed to new open-space photovoltaic systems.
