Iceland’s state-owned energy company, Landsvirkjun, has selected AFRY as its technical partner for the construction of the Búrfell wind farm. This will be Iceland's first utility-scale wind power project, located in southern Iceland.
The 120 MW wind farm will feature 28 turbines and utilize the existing infrastructure of the Búrfell hydropower plant, reducing both environmental impact and construction costs. Since 2023, AFRY has provided essential technical advisory services, including wind farm design, energy yield assessments, and overseeing the procurement process, leading to the selection of Enercon as the turbine supplier.
As the project enters the construction phase, AFRY will continue as the owner’s engineer, coordinating the detailed design and ensuring smooth collaboration with local Icelandic firms.
The project, which began in autumn 2024, is expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
