India has significantly boosted its solar energy capacity in 2024, adding 25.2 GW, a sharp increase from just 8.3 GW in the previous year. This surge was largely driven by the commissioning of delayed projects that had been held back previously.
According to the latest update from Mercom India Research, 22 GW of large-scale solar projects were installed in 2024, up from 6.6 GW in 2023. The states leading this growth were Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, contributing 32%, 27%, and 8% of the capacity, respectively.
In the fourth quarter, India added 7.8 GW of solar capacity, a significant jump from just 1.9 GW in the same period the previous year. This was part of a larger trend of growth, with 6.5 GW of large-scale projects installed during the quarter—up from 1.5 GW in 2023. Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra again led, contributing 44%, 17%, and 9% of the installations.
By December 2024, India’s total solar capacity reached 98.7 GW, with 86% coming from large-scale projects and the remaining 14% from rooftop solar. The states with the highest installed capacities were Rajasthan (28%), Gujarat (16%), and Karnataka (13%).
