Italy Increased Energy Storage Systems by 25% in Q2

The trade association Italia Solare has analyzed data from electricity transmission system operator (TSO) Terna, revealing that standalone energy storage is the most significant new market development.

As of the end of June 2024, Italy had 650,007 grid-connected energy storage systems, according to the Italian PV association Italia Solare, with a combined rated power of 4.5 GW.

"During the first half of 2024, 126,916 storage systems were connected in Italy, amounting to a total power of 1.05 GW and a capacity of 2.63 GWh," Italia Solare stated, referencing data from TSO Terna.

The data indicate that the number of storage systems grew by 24.6% in the first half of 2024, while their total rated power increased by 30.4%, signifying that the systems are getting larger.

Italia Solare noted that 58% (1.55 GWh) of the energy storage capacity connected during this period was linked to systems with less than 50 kWh capacity and associated with photovoltaic installations. Meanwhile, 2% (48 MWh) was tied to larger systems of over 50 kWh also linked to PV setups. Notably, 39% (1.04 GWh) was related to six standalone storage systems, with 35% attributed to a single 200 MW (805 MWh) facility connected in Piacenza.

The commercial and industrial (C&I) energy storage sector remains small, with a total capacity of 108 MWh in Italy. However, the segment is expanding, with 44% (48 MWh) of that total connected during the first half of 2024, according to the trade body.
