Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has completed construction of a large battery energy storage project in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do Province. As Asia's largest battery energy storage system for grid stabilization, it has a power output of 978 MW and a storage capacity of 889 MWh.
The completion ceremony took place on September 27 at the 154 kV Bubuk Substation.
Construction began in 2022 after a two-year feasibility study and was executed in phases across six substations: Yeongju, Hamyang, Yesan, Yeongcheon, Shinnamwon, and Bubuk. The largest part of the project, a 336 MW system at the Bubuk substation, became operational in July.
The KRW 830 billion ($632 million) project involved 14 companies, including Hyosung Heavy Industries, LS Electric, HD Hyundai Electric, Samsung SDI, and LG Energy Solution. KEPCO implemented the project under the 9th Basic Electricity Supply and Demand Plan, aiming for renewable energy to reach 40% of Korea's power mix by 2034. The utility also plans to build another 300 MW battery energy storage system by 2028.
