Kwikot Unveils New Smart Geyser Powered by Solar PV and Grid Electricity

On September 18, Kwikot launched its Elon Smart Water heating system, a smart geyser solution that uses both solar PV-generated electricity and grid power. Developed by PowerOptimal in collaboration with Kwikot and electronics manufacturer Microtronix, the system is designed to retrofit most of Kwikot’s existing geysers by replacing the thermostat with Elon components. It can also be integrated with Kwikot’s direct solar water heater systems.

The Elon system uses a 3 kW thermostat, compatible with 150-liter geysers, and can switch between direct current (DC) from solar panels and alternating current (AC) from the grid. Typically, it is paired with 3 kW solar PV panels for maximum efficiency. Installation of the thermostat must be carried out by qualified plumbers, while accredited electricians are required for the solar PV setup.

Customers with rooftop solar systems can connect these to the Elon system, which monitors water usage and adapts to user routines. The system can be controlled via a smart device, offering features like leak detection and preventive maintenance alerts to prevent costly repairs. Additionally, it provides the option for a rental model, where users pay only for the hot water they use.

The Elon Smart Water system connects via WiFi, with plans to offer more connectivity options in the future. According to PowerOptimal COO Dr. Sean Moolman, water heating can account for 40% to 50% of household electricity use, and the Elon system aims to improve efficiency and reduce costs, particularly with electricity prices rising faster than inflation.

With a payback period of two to four years, the Elon system offers significant savings, especially in South Africa, where water heating contributes to 17% of total energy consumption. Most of South Africa's energy comes from coal, resulting in a high carbon footprint for hot water use. The Elon system seeks to address both cost and environmental concerns, transforming Kwikot’s geysers into smart, green energy solutions.
