German energy company LEAG has begun construction on a major battery storage system, BigBattery Oberlausitz, at the Boxberg power plant site in Upper Lusatia.
Designed to support Germany’s energy transition, this 100-MW/137-MWh facility is anticipated to come online in 2025 and will provide significant energy storage capacity for the region.
The BigBattery Oberlausitz system will consist of two 50-MW storage components, utilizing over 400 compact containers equipped with efficient lithium iron phosphate batteries. Once operational, the facility will be able to store enough energy to meet the power demands of approximately 40 households for nearly 1.5 hours, making it twice as powerful as its 54-MWh predecessor, BigBattery Lausitz, which has been successfully operating since 2020.
LEAG’s latest project aligns with its broader vision to transform Lusatia, a former coal mining region, into a major green energy hub. The company has set ambitious goals to create a gigawatt-scale battery storage park in Lusatia, contributing to Germany’s renewable energy targets and enhancing grid reliability.
