Belgian real estate investor Montea NV intends to spend EUR 30 million (USD 32.3m) to equip its logistics sites in Belgium and the Netherlands with 56 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
The initiative is aligned with Montea’s efforts to narrow the ecological footprint at its facilities and reduce its reliance on the grid. The company said on Friday that the electricity discharged from the batteries will be used to light, heat and cool logistics platforms and power electric vehicles (EVs).
In Belgium, the real estate group is investing some EUR 17.5 million to install battery units at 14 locations, or at about half of its properties in its home country, including in Antwerp and Brussels. The BESS totalling 35 MWh will become operational by the end of this year.
Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Montea will add 21 MWh of battery systems at seven sites in the near future, spending further EUR 12.5 million.
According to Montea’s calculations, it will achieve a 12% return on the proposed investment in the two countries.
Montea’s operations have been carbon neutral since end-2021 thanks to green power purchases. The company aims to achieve that goal without offsetting by 2030. In line with the target, it will have 87 MWp of solar panels mounted on its rooftops by the end of 2024.
