The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently hosted a workshop in Abuja focused on the grid-scale solar program, presenting findings from two comprehensive reports: the Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) Integration Study and the Solar Auction Framework Study.
Conducted in partnership with the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), these studies aim to support Nigeria’s first utility-scale solar auction. The workshop gathered key stakeholders, including government officials, energy experts, and World Bank representatives, providing an in-depth overview of the VRE integration study, which explores the challenges and opportunities of incorporating large-scale solar power into the national grid.
The study indicates that solar energy has significant potential to enhance Nigeria’s electricity supply while addressing grid stability concerns. The solar auction framework study outlines the structure and mechanisms for the upcoming grid-scale solar auction, emphasizing a transparent and competitive bidding process. It includes a detailed roadmap for the auction, covering project selection criteria, financial models, and regulatory guidelines.
As Nigeria advances its grid-scale solar program, the successful execution of these studies will be essential for achieving the country's renewable energy goals.energy targets and fostering a more sustainable and resilient power sector,” it added.
