nLighten and Shell Spain Partner to Power Madrid Data Center with Renewables

nLighten has signed a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Shell Spain, effective April 1, 2025, to supply its Madrid data center with renewable electricity—primarily solar—from Shell’s local energy portfolio.

Unlike traditional PPAs relying solely on Guarantees of Origin, this agreement ensures greater transparency by matching nLighten’s actual energy consumption with real-time renewable generation. During low-renewable periods, Shell will manage supplemental supply, guaranteeing seamless operations while maintaining low carbon intensity.

This collaboration supports nLighten’s Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) goals and provides the flexibility to match fluctuating energy demands in real time—an essential step toward resilient, sustainable digital infrastructure.

The partnership is a key milestone in redefining the energy model for European data centers—moving the sector closer to a fully clean, future-ready infrastructure.
