This initiative will not only enhance NTPC's regional presence but also contribute to the diversification of Sri Lanka’s energy portfolio.
NTPC Limited has officially launched its 50-megawatt (MW) solar power project in Sri Lanka.
According to the company’s statement, the project, which has the potential for expansion up to 120 MW, is part of NTPC’s strategic efforts to broaden its footprint across India’s neighboring countries.
The solar project is being developed through Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC, India, and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Sri Lanka, with an estimated investment of $100 million.
This project is set to play a key role in diversifying Sri Lanka’s energy mix, significantly reducing the country's reliance on fossil fuels. Furthermore, it is projected to prevent approximately 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
The power purchase agreement between TPCL and CEB, along with the implementation agreement for Phase I of the 50 MW project with the Government of Sri Lanka, have both been finalized.
