PLN brings green energy to Indonesia's fashion industry in partnership with H&M Group

PT PLN (Persero) has announced a landmark collaboration with global fashion leader H&M Group to supply 210 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of green energy annually. This initiative marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the Indonesian industrial sector.

The memorandum of understanding on Green Energy As Services (GEAS) Dedicated Source was signed by Nayusrizal, Executive Vice President (EVP) of Sales and Customer Service Enterprise PLN, and Jessica Wilhelmsson, Regional Country Manager of China and South East Asia H&M, with the presence of Susiana Mutia, General Manager PLN UID West Java. The agreement, which took place on Wednesday (19/6), solidifies PLN’s commitment to providing environmentally friendly electricity solutions.

Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PLN, emphasized the company’s dedication to mitigating climate change through the adoption of green energy practices. “As a leader in Indonesia’s energy transition, PLN values H&M’s initiative to utilize our green energy solutions. This partnership represents a historic milestone in promoting energy transition and sustainability within Indonesia’s fashion industry,” stated Darmawan.

Edi Srimulyanti, PLN Retail and Commerce Director outlined that the GEAS Dedicated Source, scheduled for implementation by H&M Group in 2025, will cater specifically to industrial customers seeking renewable energy from PLN’s generators. This service includes a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC), recognized internationally for its environmental credentials.

“H&M and its factory partners are committed to sustainability, including the use of environmentally friendly electricity. Through this agreement, we pledge to meet H&M’s green energy requirements for their factories,” explained Edi, highlighting the joint vision for a sustainable future.

Jessica Wilhelmsson of H&M Group reiterated their commitment to transforming towards a circular business model and supporting clean energy initiatives. “REC PLN is a testament to our shared commitment with PLN and underscores our dedication to achieving systemic changes in the industrial sector,” she emphasized.

The signing ceremony also involved representatives from the World Resources Institute Indonesia (WRI Indonesia), an independent research institution advocating for sustainable socio-economic development. WRI Indonesia, partnering with PLN in achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060, recognizes the pivotal role of energy transition in reducing national emissions.

Clorinda Wibowo, Senior Manager for Energy and Sustainable Business at WRI Indonesia, commended PLN’s efforts in facilitating the transition to clean energy in industries. “The GEAS Dedicated Source ensures secure access to green energy for industrial players, fostering the growth of renewable energy projects nationwide,” she concluded.

The collaboration between PLN and H&M Group signifies a crucial step towards sustainable development in Indonesia’s industrial landscape, aligning with global efforts towards environmental stewardship and carbon neutrality.
