In a significant advancement in the renewable energy sector, PNE AG has successfully completed the sale of a substantial photovoltaic project in South Africa. The project, known as Khauta, boasts a total capacity of 240 MW and has been acquired by NOA Group Ltd., a prominent South African energy company. Situated in the Free State province, a region predominantly driven by mining and agriculture, the project is poised to make a substantial impact on the local economy and energy supply.
Expected to be fully developed by mid-2024, Khauta represents a critical step forward in South Africa’s pursuit of clean energy solutions. PNE, through its subsidiary WKN Windcurrent, will continue to play a key role in supporting the project’s advancement, with potential plans to expand its size further underscored.
Markus Lesser, CEO of PNE AG, expressed enthusiasm over the company’s continuous success in international markets, highlighting the strategic partnership with NOA as a move towards bolstering South Africa’s energy security through renewable resources.
Echoing this sentiment, Karel Cornelissen, CEO of NOA, emphasized the project’s significance as a first of its kind for NOA, marking a pivotal entry into large-scale solar energy production. With the backing of African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), NOA aims to address the energy supply challenges in South Africa significantly.
PNE’s commitment to South Africa’s renewable energy landscape extends beyond Khauta, with the company actively developing approximately 4 GW/GWp of wind and photovoltaic projects and participating in two green hydrogen initiatives. This ongoing engagement underscores PNE’s dedication to fostering sustainable energy solutions within the region.
