At the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged developed nations to assist African countries in fulfilling their commitment to expanding renewable energy.
The launch of the "Road to Joburg" campaign, which Ramaphosa introduced during the summit, comes as he prepares to take over the G20 presidency from Brazil in December.
In his address at the Global Citizen event for renewable energy, Ramaphosa highlighted the ongoing challenge that many South Africans face in accessing electricity. He emphasized the urgency of addressing South Africa's power instability, stating that the country is moving quickly to embrace renewable energy sources.
However, Ramaphosa acknowledged the difficulties Africa faces in harnessing its natural resources for renewable energy, pointing out that it is a costly endeavor. "This does not come as cheap as one would think. he said. It requires finance, it requires clear decisions by leaders, not only on the African continent but by leaders globally."
Ramaphosa stressed that Africa would need external support to meet the ambitious goal of tripling renewable energy output by 2030, as pledged at COP28. He pointed out that such commitments not only present opportunities but also unlock avenues for securing financial resources and advanced technologies, driving economic growth across the continent.
The G20 leaders will convene face-to-face on Monday to continue discussions on these critical issues.
