RES Gains Approval for 49.9 MW Battery Storage Project in Scotland

UK-based renewables developer RES has been granted permission for the construction of a 49.9-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Scotland, which will add to its roughly 700-MW portfolio of developed projects across the UK and Ireland.

The scheme has been given the green light by Angus Council, RES said on Tuesday.

The Dunmill BESS will be located around 5 km west of the town of Montrose and will help improve the grid’s flexibility by balancing supply and demand. Once in operation, it will store electricity at peak times of generation and discharge it when demand exceeds production.

The project’s construction is expected to take about 12 months, during which period local contractors and employees will be engaged.

At present, RES manages over 600 MW of battery storage systems from its control centre in Glasgow. In June, the company submitted a planning application for an up to 30-MW solar park with an energy storage system in the West Midlands of England.
