Review :Solar Energy Storage Future Asia 2024

The third edition of Solar Energy Storage Future Asia 2024 concluded with huge success paving the way for more advanced and prosperous solar future in Asia.

The one-day event organized by Energy Box was held in Bangkok on 2nd July. It aimed to help the attendees seize upon a deep and comprehensive understanding of solar energy market and to support in improving business cooperation between local companies with international companies.

 

The event kicked off with keynote speech by Watcharin Boonyarit, Director of Solar Energy Development Division, Dept. of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Ministry of Energy of Thailand. His presentation focused on Solar energy development in Thailand: current status and future prospects.


“Solar energy will become pivotal player during clean energy transition of Thailand inorder to achieve carbon neutrality and net zero emission targets,” Boonyarit remarked. His presentation also focused on National Energy Plan development, and the road towards carbon-neutrality.

 

It was followed by presentation from Steven Chen, Vice President at JA SOLAR.

The event’s first panel discussion was held on “Towards a Clean Energy Future in Asia:Accelerating Net Zero with Effective Strategies and Case Studies.” 

The speakers were:

 

  • Andre E. Susanto, Chief Technology Officer at Quantum Power Asia

  • Supa Waisayarat,Country Director (Vietnam) at SUPER ENERGY CORPORATION PLC

  • Somesh Shah,Manager-International Solar Business at AFRY

  • Richard Scott,VP Global Development & Construction (Onshore) at Jera Nex

  • Benoit Dubeau,APJC Renewables Manager at Amazon Web Services (AWS)

  • Assco. Prof. Dr. Wirachai Roynarin,Founder and Exclusive Committee at TRECA

 

The session was moderated by Bancha Yathip,Assistant Project Director at Gunkul Engineering Public Company Limited.

Following the panel discussion, Leon Chuang-Global Marketing Director at Risen Energy delivered a special presentation on “HJT module for global utility scale deployment.”

Leon started his presentation by sharing about company’s milestones and briefed on eight major production bases and capacity layout, mainstream technology roadmap and full application scenarios, technical breakthrough and so on.


The company has achieved 21GW+ Hyper-ion Modules and 19GW+ Hyper-ion Solar Cell so far. He further presented on Hyper-ion Modules and HJT product milestones, advantages and cost benefit analysis among others. Furthermore, he presented about HJT reference PV Projects spread across different countries.

 

The event was followed by presentation from Noravit Vittayakom - Sales Manager, Thailand at JA Solar. He shared his insights on “A Journey to power a sustainable world with solar energy by JA SOLAR.”

Noravit shared about the company products, their major fetaures and the advantages. He further shared about JA Solar’s reference PV Projects spread across different countries like China, US, Jordan, Korea, Cambodia and so on.

Following this, the event featured another panel discussion on “Utility-Scale Solar Deployment in Asia:  Opportunities and Challenges for Scaling Up Solar Energy Deployment.” The Speakers were:

 

  • Moin Eusof,Head of Engineering Solar, SEA at BayWa r.e.

  • Vincent YAP - Chief Operating Officer at Solarvest

  • Laurence Kwan,Director, Head of Renewable Energy at Cambridge Real Estate Partners

  • Jacqueline Castillo,Chief Operating Officer and Head of Sales, Marketing and Regulatory at Mabuhay Energy Corporation

  • Tom Warwick - Senior Manager, International Development at Lightsource bp

  • Kyle Katoski - Partner at Vector Energy Advisory

 

Joseph Tomkiewicz, Vice President Regions, Executive Committee and Board Member, at Association of International Energy Negotiators served as the Moderator for this panel discussion.

Following this, the event had a presentation from Jacky Chan, Director of Overseas KA Sales and Project Development at Huasun on “HETEROJUNCTION in PV Plants 2024+”

Chan shared that being the largest HJT manufacturer, the company has achieved 20GW+ production capacity by 2024. He further highlighted on Why Heterojunction and  explained about its proven PV technology and characteristics. Higher Efficiency, Higher Yield, Proven Reliability leads to LOWER LCOE, he remarked.

 

Furthermore, he shared about world's largest HJT utility solar project to present in Bulgaria.


Following this, James Hou, APAC Sales Director at Goodwe, delivered special presentation on “DRIVING THE WORLD'S SMART ENERGY FUTURE.”

“With an accumulative installation of 71.2 GW installed in more than 100 countries as the end of 2023, GoodWe solar inverters have been largely used in residential and commercial rooftops, industrial and utility scale systems, ranging from 0.7kW to 350kW,” Hou further explained. He also shared about GOODWE product portfolio and their major advantages, along with the reference projects in different countries.

 

This was followed by another panel discussion session on “Accelerating RE Growth: C & I and Residential Sector Investments and Partnerships for a Net-Zero Future.” Nathalie Risteau - Co-Founder at Sunollo moderated the panel, where the esteemed speakers shared their insights and opinions. The panelists were:

 

  • Kij Nimsawang - Director of Business Development at BECIS - Commercial Industrial Solutions

  • Daryl Lai - Regional Lead at Ditrolic Energy

  • Jack Tan - Group Vice President of Solarvest

  • Caleb Hall-Senior Business Development Manager at AT Energy

It was followed by a CEO panel discussion on “Decarbonization Pathways and Net-Zero Goals: Strategies for Achieving Sustainable Energy Futures” moderated by Ruth P Briones,Chairman and CEO at Greenergy Solutions Inc. The esteemed speakers were:

 

  • Reik Ong, Founder and Managing Director at Saxon Renewables

  • Narsingh Chaudhary,President, Asia Pacific & India Region at Black & Veatch

  • Davide Pacheco, CEO Asia Pacific and Board Member at Amarenco

  • Stephane Dufrenne,Chief Commercial and Partnerships Officer, Thailand and South East-Asia at Green Yellow

  • Glenn Lim, Chief Executive Officer at NEFIN

  • Somboon Lertsuwannaroj,CEO at Altervim

  • Jerry Cui, Asia Pacific & MEA Market Sales Director, SolaX Power

Following the CEO session, the event had a special presentation by Hill Yang, APMEA Director from DAS Solar on DAS DAON Leading N Technology.

Established in 2018, the company falls under Top 10 Shipment with 18GW+ by the end of 2023. In terms of production capacity, the company has achieved 30+ GW module and 30+ GW cell.

He also explained about DAS Solar TOPCon technology development, N-type product series and their features. “In the N-type era, DAS Solar's N-type 4.0 Series takes the lead by enhancing efficiency in the range of rectangular modules,” he explained. Furthermore, he presented about N-type module pilot project built by TÜV SUD and DAS Solar in Hainan.

 

Meanwhile, the event had a next presentation on “Empowering Thailand with Kseng All-Scenario Solar Mounting Solutions” by Hannah Zhou from KSENG.

She shared about company’s dual-base manufacturing strength, adding that Thailand's PDP aims for over 15.6GW of cumulative photovoltaic capacity by 2035, highlighting significant growth for distributed solar installations.

 

Furthermore, she explained about roof and ground solar mounting systems and carport/ agrivoltaics solar mounting systems and their characteristics.

 

Meanwhile, the event featured Energy Storage panel on “Energy storage development status & trends - role in Asian RE market.” The session was moderated by Pasamon Pechrasuwan, Principal Consultant & Associate Fellow at Frost & Sullivan Asia-Pacific.

 

The panelists were:

 

  • Akarin Suwannarat, Special Assistant to CEO / EVP at Energy Absolute PCL (EA)

  • İbrahim Kocagöz, Engineering Solutions Director at PCS Thailand

  • Sirikanda Nuansaeng , Senior Energy Storage Specialist at Mott MacDonald

  • Modini Yantrapati, Senior Energy Storage Consultant APAC at DNV

  • Sansana Rattanasaengsakulthai, Project Specialist-Renewable Energy at Black & Veatch

Following this, another panel discussion was focused on Finance entitled “Financing Models and Investment Opportunities for Solar & Energy Storage Projects in Asia.” Jack Kneeland, Partner at Vector Energy Advisory Pte Ltd, moderated the session.

 

The speakers were:

 

  • Doris Hung, Executive Director at DBS Bank

  • Julia Tong, Director,Renewables and Sustainable Energy Structured Finance at SMBC

  • Lu Yang, Executive Director, Clean Technology Investment Banking, Standard Chartered Bank

  • Tuan Phung,Managing Partner at VCI Legal

  • Kapil Seth,CEO at Sunollo

It was followed by a special presentation on “The Smart MPLE Solutions for C&I and Residential PV Systems. It was delivered by Frank Qin, Overseas Sales Director at AndSolar.

Frank started his presentation by sharing an overview on global industry development, as it is forecasted that global installed capacity will reach 2550GW, (450GW per year, of which 200GW distributed ) in 2024-2028. He further briefed about application scenarios.

Frank explained about MLPE solutions and AndSolar Smart RSD-Product features, along with project cases from different countries.

 

Frank’s session was followed by a panel discussion on “Scaling Up Rooftop Solar Adoption in Asia: Lessons Learned and Best Practices.” It was moderated by Arpusara Songkavijit - Strategic Marketing Director at Green Yellow Thailand.

 

The panelists were:

 

  • Chayasak Itthisiri-Managing Director at SP Group Thailand

  • Junrhey Castro - Managing Director at BayWa r.e. Solar Distribution / South East Asia

  • Parkpoom Thuaycharoen, Head of Operations - Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia & Singapore at Cleantech Solar

  • Moses Zhang - VP, Global Marketing and APAC Sales at AKCOME

Likewise, the final panel discussion of the conference was focused on “ESG Investment and Practice:How Companies Can Effectively Assess, Manage and Disclose on Their ESG Risks and Positive Impacts.”

 

The esteemed speakers included:

  • Pariphan Uawithya,Managing Director, Country Delivery, Asia at GEAPP

  • Bhami Ilyas - Regional Business Director at CPP Wind Engineering Consultants

  • Stanley Ng - Global Partnerships Director at New Energy Nexus

 

Poomsanti Wairith, CPA - Managing Director at Patana Advisors served as a moderator of this final session.

On the occasion, Energy Box hosted a special awarding ceremony, where different companies and individuals were honored for their significant contributions to the renewable industry in Asia.
