Romania’s inaugural Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction has successfully allocated over 1,500 MW of renewable energy capacity, marking a significant step forward in the country’s energy transition. A total of 1,528 MW has been awarded, with 432 MW going to solar PV projects and 1,096 MW to onshore wind projects.
The winning bids came in highly competitive, with prices 20-30% below the cap. The average price for wind energy was €65/MWh, while solar energy averaged €51/MWh. These results reflect growing investor confidence in Romania’s renewable energy market and the attractiveness of its long-term power purchase agreements.
The auction, funded by Romania’s Modernization Fund, introduces a 15-year fixed-price mechanism, which will help mitigate financial risks for investors and offer predictable pricing for consumers. This move aligns with Romania’s goals of strengthening its renewable energy capacity and contributing to Europe’s broader energy transition.
Out of 48 bids submitted, 47 were deemed eligible for financial evaluation, with substantial interest across both wind and solar technologies. In total, 1,196 MW was offered for onshore wind projects and 1,615 MW for solar PV projects, highlighting the high demand and potential for growth in Romania’s renewable energy sector.
The government plans to hold another CfD auction in 2025, aiming to award 3,500 MW of additional renewable capacity and introduce an energy storage scheme. This will further support the country’s renewable energy ambitions and enhance the stability of its energy grid.
