Root-Power Secures Approval for 50-MW Energy Storage Facility in Glasgow

Root-Power, a UK-based energy storage company, has secured planning approval for a 50-MW/100-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the heart of Glasgow, close to Ibrox Stadium. This approval is a key milestone as the project progresses into the design and construction stages.

Although the company faced initial difficulties in finding a suitable location and navigating complex planning processes, these challenges have now been resolved.

The facility is expected to be up and running by mid-2026, providing vital support to Glasgow’s energy grid.

This new development is part of Root-Power's larger effort to expand its energy storage infrastructure across the UK. In addition to this Glasgow project, the company has filed planning applications for six more BESS projects, totaling 315 MW, across various UK regions, including North Yorkshire, Devon, Derbyshire, Bedfordshire, Glamorgan, and Gloucestershire.
