Solarwatt closes down production of battery storage systems in Dresden

Production is to be stopped at the end of the year. Solarwatt had previously announced that it would end module production in Dresden. In future, the Dresden-based company will have all modules and storage units manufactured exclusively in Asia.

Starting next year, Solarwatt will no longer produce modules or storage in Dresden, but wants to drive forward the development and optimization of its systems there.

First module production and now storage production: Solarwatt officially confirmed on Monday its plans to stop producing battery storage systems at its Dresden site at the end of the year. At the end of last week, employees were informed of this at a company meeting. "Continuing operations in Germany beyond 2024 is unfortunately no longer possible for the foreseeable future for economic reasons," says Detlef Neuhaus, CEO of Solarwatt.

According to the updated plans, a total of around 170 of the 750 employees will be affected by the closure of module and storage production in Germany. Solarwatt had previously assumed that 190 people would be affected. However, the company is trying to find employment for the employees in other areas, such as consulting, planning or installation.

In April, Solarwatt announced that it would be closing its module production facility in Dresden in August. The reasons are similar, and in this area too, it is primarily economic factors. There are other parallels - like the modules, Solarwatt also wants to have its battery storage units manufactured by contract manufacturers in Asia in the future. The "Solarwatt Battery flex", for which an extension will be presented shortly, will still be produced in Dresden until the end of the year. In addition, the next generation of battery storage units is already being developed in parallel. "We are currently qualifying a production partner for the new generation," explains Detlef Neuhaus.

In the future, Solarwatt wants to concentrate on complete solutions and energy management and invest heavily in this area . The company also plans to sell its products more directly. Several new, own locations are to be set up from which to take over the planning and installation of photovoltaic systems and heat pumps for homeowners and businesses. However, the aim is not to create competition with existing specialist partners - it is more about covering white spots on the map of Germany, as Neuhaus emphasized in an interview a few weeks ago .
