SPS and Partners to Build 6 MW Solar Plant in South Africa

A 6 MW solar plant is set to be developed in South Africa following a partnership between Sustainable Power Solutions (SPS), Darling Green Country Estate, and TouchPoint Energy. The project, designed to enhance local energy resilience and supply clean energy, will be completed in phases.

In the first phase, SPS will commission a 1 MW solar plant to power the newly established Darling Green Country Estate. For the first three years, this energy will also be sold to the Swartland Municipality while the estate continues development, with all 163 plots already sold.

The second phase will involve constructing a 5 MW solar farm that will connect to the Eskom substation, allowing SPS to supply power through wheeling to Eskom customers across South Africa. Phase one is expected to be operational by the end of October 2024, with the second phase scheduled for mid-2025.

Francois van Themaat, Managing Director of SPS, expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing its positive impact on the Darling community by providing protection against load shedding. He also sees this partnership with TouchPoint Energy as a significant step in advancing renewable energy infrastructure in the Western Cape.

This initiative positions Darling as a leader in green energy adoption and highlights the strong support from Swartland Municipality, which has been an advocate of the project since its inception.
