SSE and Gilkes Energy have submitted a Section 36 planning consent application to Scottish Government Ministers for the Fearna Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH) project, a 1.8GW, 36GWh joint venture in Scotland’s Highlands. If approved and constructed, it would be the UK’s largest pumped storage hydro scheme, providing 20 hours of energy storage.
Located 25km west of Invergarry, the project connects Loch Quoich and Loch Fearna, forming part of SSE Renewables’ hydro network in the Great Glen. Construction, expected to take seven years, could create 500 jobs at peak, boosting the local economy.
Under the 50:50 joint venture, Gilkes Energy leads project development, while SSE Renewables—operator of Scotland’s largest hydro fleet—continues expanding large-scale, long-duration energy storage solutions.
Fraser Allison, Project Director, Fearna PSH, said:“This landmark project has the potential to be the UK’s largest for both installed capacity and stored energy. We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders, the supply chain, and the local community as the planning process progresses.”
