TNB to start commercial operation of 50MW solar farm project in Malaysia

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has planned to start commercial operation of its 50MW solar farm project in Malaysia. The project is under the large scale solar 4 (LSS4) program, which is likely to begin operation by the end of this year. The project is located at Bukit Selambau near its other 30 MW solar farm. According to TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd managing director Mohd Yusrizal Mohd Yusof, “A 50MW solar farm would power the equivalent of approximately 28,700 homes annually.” The location already has a project that TNB constructed under the LSS 2 program which started commercial operation on 2020. The company informed that it has been operating two solar farms with 80MW power at the moment under the LSS programme. Besides, the company is also considering developing another 30MW solar project. To be noted, TNB has set a target of achieving 8,300 MW renewable energy production capacity by 2025. “In Peninsular Malaysia, the next RE projects are likely to be focusing on solar as the main source. This is partly due to the fact that hydro has already reached its peak in the peninsula, and RE from wind is not suitable in Malaysia because the closer we are to the equator the less wind you will get,” Yusrizal said, a local media reported. Meanwhile, TNB has also plans of developing other renewable projects in Southeast Asia.
