French energy group TotalEnergies on Monday announced it has secured environmental permits for large-scale solar projects that will add roughly 3 GW of capacity in several Spanish regions.
Favourable Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have been granted by Spain’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Autonomous Communities to a bundle of 48 photovoltaic (PV) projects.
The bulk of the approved projects, with a combined capacity of 1.9 GW, are planned to be installed in the Madrid region, while the southern region of Murcia will become home to more than 350 MW of solar parks. Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain will accommodate more than 300 MW of PV panels and Andalusia and Aragon, in the southernmost and northernmost parts of the country, will host 263 MW and 150 MW, respectively.
The first ones of the proposed projects are planned to kick off operations early in 2024. Once fully commissioned, the solar farms will be capable of generating around 6,000 MWh of electricity per year, equal to the consumption of close to four million people. According to TotalEnergies, their combined output will help offset some 50 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions during their lifespan.
“For TotalEnergies, these projects will bring us closer to our goal of 100 GW of gross renewable installed capacity by 2030 worldwide,” said Patrick Pouyanne, chairman and CEP of TotalEnergies.
Spain aims to produce 70% of its total power from renewable energy sources by 2030 and reach 100% by 2050.
